Learning how to brand yourself is a rising topic of discussion as it has become easier for people to gain exposure through the use of technologies such as the internet. The very first step to creating your brand is to understand what a brand is.
As you are brainstorming ways on how to brand yourself, think about other brands that you are accustomed to. What makes their brand attractive? How does it resonate with their customers? How would customers react if there was a drastic shift in the brands identity?
Allow me to take you through an example on what it means to have or to be a brand, and how this will impact your business.
Let's have a look at three coffee shops. Starbucks, Second Cup, and (for the Canadians) Country Styles, which is a smaller franchise. Now when you look at each of these coffee shops you can get a taste of what their brand is by asking a few questions. Imagine there are three stickmen on a piece of paper with the same size figure and the only thing that differs is that you can see which coffee cup they are holding. The first is holding a Starbucks cup. Write down everything you can think of about this person. Is it a man or woman? What age? What car do they drive? Did they walk? What job do they have? What are their hobbies? What do they like to do on their time off? Repeat this exercise for the other two stickmen’s who are holding the different cups.
As you go through this exercise you notice that these people are vastly different. From the way they dress, to the type of newspaper they read. As you are thinking about how to brand yourself, ask yourself who is your stickman?
One of the main challenges you may face as you are learning how to brand yourself is to understand who you are communicating with. It is essential to have a clear understanding of who your target audience is. You need to know everything about them; what keeps them awake at night, and what kind of pains they are faced with.
Your brand will not communicate with everyone, and that's alright. So that is your first step when learning how to brand yourself. Your brand will be seen as a living entity that people may or may not want to subscribe to. Just make it very clear and consistent of who you are.
